Shafi'i Madhab
Shafi'i Madhab — Zakat Rules
Widely followed in East Africa, Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei), and parts of the Arabian Peninsula and Levant.
Key differences
- Worn jewellery is NOT zakatable
- Zakat IS due on a minor's wealth (guardian pays)
- Payment must be immediate when hawl completes
Zakat on Jewellery
Worn gold and silver jewellery is exempt from zakat in the Shafi'i madhab. Only gold or silver held for investment or trade is zakatable.
Wealth of Minors
Zakat is due on the wealth of a pre-pubescent child in the Shafi'i school. The guardian is responsible for calculating and paying from the child's wealth.
Timing
Zakat must be paid promptly when the hawl completes. Advance payment before the hawl ends is permitted according to many Shafi'i scholars.
