Maliki Madhab — Zakat Rules

Predominant in North Africa, West Africa, and parts of the Gulf. One of the strictest madhabs on the timing of zakat payment.

Key differences

  • Worn jewellery is NOT zakatable
  • Zakat IS due on a minor's wealth (guardian pays)
  • Payment must be made immediately when hawl completes
  • Advance payment (before hawl ends) is NOT permitted

Zakat on Jewellery

According to the majority Maliki view, jewellery that is worn or used regularly is exempt from zakat. Only gold or silver held as an investment or stored (not worn) is zakatable.

Wealth of Minors

Unlike the Hanafi madhab, the Maliki school holds that zakat is due on the wealth of a pre-pubescent child. The guardian is responsible for paying it from the child's wealth.

Timing of Payment

The Maliki madhab is the strictest on timing: zakat must be paid immediately when the hawl (lunar year) completes. Deliberate delay is sinful. Advance payment before the hawl ends is also not permitted in the Maliki view.
